Invitation for Collaboration with a Student Radio Group from France

Dear Middle School Teachers,

Radio signifies communication, collaboration, interaction, interactivity, and the exchange of ideas!

Aligned with this approach, we invite you to join your schools in an exciting new initiative. Our partners in France, “Les Francas”, who collaborate with us in the European program Kids Radio Europe, have invited schools in our network to participate in the project of their local partners, “Francas des Landes.” These partners recently joined the Kids Radio Europe program and are implementing a local initiative called “Collégiens Citoyens” [“Student Citizens”] in the Landes department (western France). This initiative offers students in the Landes region a unique opportunity to host and manage a media platform run entirely by students within their schools.

The theme of this year’s “Student Citizens” program is: “Engagement with European Youth.”

The project seeks active collaboration opportunities between middle school students in France and their European peers. The aim is to facilitate communication and cooperation on shared projects focusing on radio production, media education, and information literacy skills.

Through this initiative, youth participation in the program will be strengthened by multiplying online exchanges between European groups. Students will have the opportunity to gain valuable experiences, develop skills, and enhance cultural understanding.

Suggested activities include:

  • Exchanging recorded radio shows or podcasts on topics such as school life, cultural differences, or local events.
  • Developing collaborative projects exploring information literacy and journalistic ethics.
  • Hosting virtual meetings or discussions to improve communication and teamwork skills.

We encourage middle schools to register and allow their students to share their experiences, perspectives, and talents through this initiative.

You can find more details in the attached poster, along with the registration form.

BE SafeR@EuropeanSchoolRadio- Radio Campaign for Safer Internet Day 2025

We announce a new action in the framework of European School Radio’s cooperation with the Interregional Thematic Network “Internet Safety” for the third consecutive year and on Safer Internet Day 2025.

A creative information campaign will be held from February 10, 2025, until the end of the school year. Through this campaign, Primary and Secondary Education students will raise awareness among the public, listeners, and online followers about the dangers of the Internet.

How to participate

You will create your Podcast series, with short episodes, in the following subcategories of the “Technology” topic related to Internet Safety.

Topics

  • Social Media
    • Privacy violation, bullying, scams, contact with fake profiles, permanent retention of content and addiction.
  • Cyberbullying
    • Cyberbullying is the repeated sending of threatening or abusive messages, as well as the posting of photos or videos taken without the consent of the child being bullied.
  • Surf ethically and critically
    • Critical thinking is important in assessing the reliability of the information we encounter, as the Internet contains both reliable and unreliable sources. It is important to recognize and avoid phenomena such as “clickbait” (provocative headlines that mislead to gain clicks) and “fake news” (false news), as well as to manage our online reputation responsibly.
  • Internet addiction
    • Internet addiction in children and adolescents can cause isolation, decreased school performance, sleep disorders, and mental health problems.
  • Protection from malware and malicious users
    • The risks of weak passwords include data theft, fraud, brute force attacks, personal information leakage, and loss of access.
    • Risks from malware and users include theft of personal data, infection of systems with viruses, phishing attacks, and file destruction or corruption by malware.

Details on how your Podcast is structured

Your series should have at least two episodes, of whatever length you want. However, make sure that all episodes are approximately the same length.

  • Minimum number of episodes in the series: 2 episodes
  • Minimum duration of each episode: 3 minutes

Suggestions for your content

  • For the poster/banner

We may be doing a Podcast, but the image plays a very important role in communication and dissemination. The series poster should be simple, have characteristic objects (logo or icon), and keep a single line, in each individual episode poster. The poster can be designed digitally, be one for the entire series, and in each episode either the background color changes by simply adding “Episode 1:…” or it remains the same and the episode title is entered. Here you should take into account that each episode has its poster, which appears to be a continuation of the central poster. The dimensions should be 1080X1080 px

  • For the script

Plan what you want to present and how. Study the types of Podcasts below, which will help you set up your own series. Do you want them to be interviewed? Do you prefer them to be short stories taken from the imagination? Divide them directly into episodes according to the content each time and use creative writing techniques to write the script. Always keep in mind that they must attract the listener’s interest, to listen to your series because they can’t wait for the next episode.

  • For the sound design of the spot and episodes

    • Choose a piece of music without words that represent the whole series and think about how it can be used as a sound signal. You may also need a sound effect that signals the start of the speech after the sound signal is heard.
    • The spot contains an excerpt of this piece along with a few words announcing the series. You can mention the name of your school and the name of the series along with the phrase “as part of the radio campaign for Safer Internet Day 2025 on European School Radio”
    • Part of this piece of music along with the sound effect will be used for a few seconds as an introduction and closing to each episode. Think of it as the characteristic sound of your series and each episode should have a short introduction sound and an ending sound that reminds you that this is your series.

Communication strategy for your participation

You must announce your turn on Social Media (Facebook, Instagram) by tagging the @EuropeanSchoolRadio  and adding the hashtag

#SaferInternetDay2025

BE SafER @EuropeanSchoolRadio

You can make an announcement (create a blog post) to the Community, on Social Media as soon as you finish creating the Podcast, along with the poster, the spot, and the next time you upload an episode.

An educational Podcast Series

A Podcast for Podcasts: https://europeanschoolradio.eu/podcast/7702

Podcast types

  1. Interview

An interview podcast usually features one or two hosts speaking with one or more guests in each episode. Conducting interviews that draw out compelling stories and insights from the guests requires significant research and strong communication skills.

  2.  Monologue (Solo Podcast with Commentary)

A single host speaks throughout the episode, often focusing on a specific topic, and providing in-depth analysis or personal opinions. Listeners tune in to learn about a particular subject or to hear well-informed perspectives on recent events.

  3. Panel – Discussion Show with Two or More Speakers

Two or more hosts discuss specific topics with humor and insightful commentary. Guests are often invited to enrich the discussion. When there are more than two participants, and the discussion follows a more structured format, it is often referred to as a “Roundtable” or “Panel” podcast.

  4. Investigative Podcasts (Nonfiction Narrative)

A narrative-style podcast where one or more hosts present an entire story or a chapter from an ongoing narrative. This type often includes journalistic investigation or narrating real events, such as true crime, historical cases, or scientific discoveries.

  5. Αudio drama (Fictional Storytelling)

One or more hosts narrate a story like an audiobook, while other participants often dramatize the narration. The use of sound effects and multidimensional audio creates a highly theatrical experience.

In an atmosphere of joy, the 13th Anniversary of the European School Radio was successfully celebrated

This year, for our anniversary on December 19th, we decided to celebrate with everyone in our city, Thessaloniki, by organizing our radio event in the festive Aristotelous Square, with the support of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Representatives of the Administrative Committee, Partners, and members of the Student Radio Team from the International Hellenic University (Department of Information and Electronic Engineering, Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, Department of Organization Management, Marketing, and Tourism), and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (School of Journalism and Mass Communications) joined us in the celebration. Also present was the Vice Rector of Internationalization, Public Relations, and Digital Governance of the International Hellenic University, Professor Konstantinos Diamantaras, who has been by our side for many years in this effort. He gave a live interview on air and sent 13 wonderful wishes to all our radio members!
In an atmosphere of joy and emotion, we celebrated outside the studio for the first time as part of the European School Radio’s anniversary broadcast series. This marked our inaugural public outreach event, where we hosted a rich live program filled with music and heartfelt wishes from our schools, broadcast live on European School Radio, and heard throughout the square. A large crowd of passersby, young and old radio enthusiasts, visited our wooden booth, gave interviews, participated in competitions, took on challenges, and received gifts from the event sponsors, including Cineplexx (movie tickets), Egoboo (headphones, mobile phone accessories, and power banks), and Kyana (shampoo).
It was a vibrant party, complete with treats and drinks offered by Sklavenitis Supermarkets. Ultimately, the production team sang the radio station’s birthday song together and blew out the candles on the birthday cake.
We warmly thank the schools for their wishes, all our visitors and listeners, our supporters, and the media that covered the event with reports and publications.
Specifically, we would like to thank:
ΕΡΤnews, for the coverage.
TV100 for the reportage.
The portals Thestival, Makthes, Cityportal, Voria, Typosthes for the announcement.

Be part of the World Radio Day 2024

UNESCO is celebrating World Radio Day, along with us who were invited as a radio station to participate in the action. It was an open call to the radio industry so that we could all talk about the uniqueness of this medium for 100 years and discuss its evolution in the next century. We have declared ourselves open to collaboration with other stations around the world and we are already preparing an exchange of radio material with the French radio station https://www.rvvs.fr/

What role did radio play in history in these important areas? What does radio mean to us? Why is it different from other media? Even now that technology has changed a lot in a few years, as a medium it remains there for many reasons, but now it has to face new challenges. UNESCO’s World Radio Day 2024 announcement reminds us of its timeless value. But, at the same time, it worries us. The motto this year is: “Radio: A Century of Information, Psychology and Education”. Discover the network of radio stations taking part in the action through the World Radio Day map.

In the February 13 radio program, we plan to broadcast special programs dedicated to Radio Day. You too can book and send us a show. In the educational program, we will have a special live show that day at 11.00, from the Music School of Veria, and a surprise band that will play live. The program’s Student Radio & Podcast Group will take over for a live music show, to which we invite you!

In what way?

  1. By sending us in the Forum (https://community.europeanschoolradio.eu/el/groups/studio-esr/) your favorite song that contains the word “radio” in the lyrics in any language you want or refers to the medium of radio! From these, we will choose 10 songs for a unique TOP10 that we will have on the live show of the Student Group Radiio & Podcast on Tuesday, February 13 from 12 to 1 in the afternoon!
  2. By staying tuned on the live radio show and joining the Player chat to take part in a Q&A game about the songs you’ve chosen and we’ve featured for our show!
  3. By creating a 30-50 second spot talking about radio, expressing your opinion about this wonderful medium of communication, entertainment, and education, or just telling us why you chose and recommended this song! To do this, you should from the “Create Show/Podcast” and the “Production type” option select “World Radio Day Spot”

Are you sure you know them all? Get ready for an exploration of internet safety and create original radio messages with your school. Student submissions will be accepted by European School Radio until February 4th, so that we can organize the material and broadcast it on the radio program on February 6th, which will feature thematic productions as part of Internet Safety Day.

Submission Instructions

Initially, register by following the Participation Guide.

Next, from the “Podcast/Radio” menu, choose “Create a show/podcast.” Select “Show” and set the production type as “Safer Internet Day”

  • Interviews: Experts from invited experts who speak about internet safety.
  • Panel: The presenters (2 or more speakers) cover different perspectives on internet safety through a brief and focused discussion.
  • Audio Drama: Students as actors take on roles and, through theatrical dialogue, highlight various aspects of the topic.

Also, you can plan and develop a long-format radio show (half or one hour) and schedule it to be broadcast on February 6, 2024. It could serve as a comprehensive report on Internet Safety and the risks young individuals face, starting from an early age, as content creators on social media platforms.

Below, you can find our clever tips for creating successful radio messages

Choose brief slogans
  • “Surf Freely – Click Everything?”
  • “Your Digital Data? Safe is up to You”
Advise the listeners on safe internet browsing
  • “Listen to our story on how to keep your personal information secure online.”
  • “Take Control: Learn how to adjust your privacy settings.”
Communicate it with humor

Do you want to convey something important, something you think they should pay attention to? But how? Unleash your imagination, think creatively, and make the listeners smile. Play with the internet and digital world terminology, and use them cleverly in everyday speech. Or, you can create a fictional hero who will narrate your story… It might sound funny or not serious, but believe us. This will stick with them!”

Tune in with us to explore the digital world, have fun, and Surf Safe through the Web Radio Wave of European School Radio…🔒💻🌈
