The participation of the Gymnasium and Lyceum of Neos Marmaras in the European program Kids Radio Europe was not merely a series of creative activities, but a valuable experience in learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Students had the opportunity to open their microphones and their minds, to work as young journalists and radio producers, to share their ideas through the power of sound, and to discover that their voices carry value and resonance beyond the borders of their country. Their interaction with peers from other European countries, their involvement in international events and festivals, and the collaborative creation of content have laid the foundations for the future of the educational community of Neos Marmaras. This initiative stands as a powerful example of how a school can transform into a living laboratory of expression, creativity, and European coexistence.

Educational Program Brings School to the University – Radio as a Dynamic Tool in Media Pedagogy

An exceptional and productive year has concluded for the inter-university educational program “Broadcasting Live on European School Radio – Journalist Production”, co-organized by the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering at the International Hellenic University and the Department of Journalism and Mass Media at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

This is the first Media Pedagogy program focused on sound, radio, and podcasts. It has been successfully implemented for the 10th consecutive year at the Alexander Campus in Sindos, coordinated by the scientific society “EUROPEAN SCHOOL RADIO – THE FIRST STUDENT RADIO,” and supported by the Journalists’ Union of Macedonia and Thrace Daily Newspapers.

We are aware of numerous educational programs developed in collaboration with universities. But how many schools conduct real lessons within the university – and not just through guided tours?

In this case, a comprehensive program was designed with clear pedagogical goals and methodology, intended for implementation within the academic environment. Students don’t just visit the university – they actively participate, engage in learning experiences alongside university students, and, for a short time, become part of university life. They have the opportunity to explore radio both technologically and journalistically at an advanced level and through an interdisciplinary approach, via a specially designed curriculum that closely follows the principles of Pedagogical Science while drawing upon the academic expertise of both departments.

During the academic year, 17 educational visits took place with schools from across Greece, as well as from Italy, France, and Germany. More than 450 students participated in the European School Radio program, creating content for radio broadcasts through systematic preparation with Mentors. They took part in experiential workshops, produced their live broadcast from the studio, and delivered their messages as Active Citizens. At the same time, they gained an authentic experience of professional radio, training in roles such as Communication, Radio Journalism, Sound Engineering, Audio Editing, and Online Broadcasting under the guidance of the Pedagogical Team.

All productions are available at the following link: https://europeanschoolradio.eu/el/podcast/7935

The participation of the 7th Primary School of Neapoli in the program, captured in a short video:

By participating in radio events, such as the 13th Anniversary Celebration of European School Radio at Aristotelous Square on December 19, 2024, they enhanced the station’s outreach while also gaining valuable skills in organizing activities.

Their involvement peaked with the design and implementation of educational actions at the 9th Student Radio Festival, held in Sithonia from April 9 to 12, 2025.

The festival was co-funded by the European program Kids Radio Europe (Project GAP 101136199 / CREA-CROSS-2023-MEDIA LITERACY), with support from the Ministry of Culture and the Greek-German Youth Foundation. This innovative educational initiative, which for the first time brought together 650 students from Greece, Cyprus, France, and Germany, enhanced communication, collaboration, and artistic creativity. Through the production of podcasts and music content, students were allowed to express themselves freely, be entertained, and create, gaining meaningful benefits and experiencing the pedagogical value of creativity and imagination.

During the academic year, the student team supported the participation of the International Hellenic University in major events by providing radio and journalistic coverage, such as:

  • 88th Thessaloniki International Fair (September 7–15, 2024)

  • 39th International Tourism Exhibition Philoxenia-Hotelia (November 14–16, 2024)

  • E4E ROADSHOW – Future Skills for Engineers, at Alexander Campus (March 6, 2025)

  • TechSaloniki 2025, at Thessaloniki Concert Hall (May 16–17, 2025)

  • Erasmus Staff Mobility Week: Strengthening Networks, Sharing Knowledge (May 26–30, 2025)

The success of the program highlights the dynamic role of European School Radio as a platform for open education that bridges school, university, and professional experience. It creates the conditions for the youth voice to grow stronger, be heard, inspire, and mobilize.

European Journalism Through the Eyes of the New Generation: European School Radio’s Participation Following an Invitation from Europarl Radio

The European School Radio received an official invitation to participate from Europarl Radio, the web radio of the European Parliament, as part of the European Youth Event 2025 (EYE2025), which took place in Strasbourg on June 13–14, 2025.

EYE is a unique event that brings together thousands of young people from across the EU, offering them a platform to exchange ideas, get inspired, and actively engage in the European dialogue. The program included a wide range of engaging interviews, discussions, podcasts, and music from all over Europe. Within this context, Europarl Radio launched an open call for podcast submissions on topics related to the European Union, inviting youth-focused radio networks – among them, European School Radio, to contribute their voice.

Responding to this honorable invitation, European School Radio proposed the participation of Konstantinos Rafail Pangalos, an undergraduate student at the School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with his podcast titled:
“European Journalism: Reflections of a Young Journalist for a Better Tomorrow.”

This audio production explores the importance of citizen awareness, the role of journalism in strengthening European identity, and the challenges faced by the EU during times of crisis, such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. At the same time, it highlights innovative initiatives like the YouthRadio.eu platform, developed through the European partnership Kids Radio Europe, which promotes multilingualism, youth participation, and the educational use of audio.

Although the episode was not selected for live broadcast on Europarl Radio’s program, its contribution to the European discourse is timely and meaningful. Europarl Radio praised the podcast as highly interesting, addressing topics relevant to young people and reflecting core EU values.

Its production showcases the potential of youth journalism and reaffirms the role of European School Radio as a vital platform for amplifying the voice of young people across Europe.

The European School Radio youth team at the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “Connecting Through Sports” in Georgia

The program commenced with the Preparatory Visit (May 3-6). The Team Leader from our organization was Konstantinos Mirtsos, and he actively participated in the first meeting that was organized in Gonio. The target was to get to know each other and be informed about the procedures of the specific Youth Exchange.

Between May 27 – June 4, 2025, the European School Radio team had the pleasure of participating in the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Connecting Through Sports” in Gonio, Georgia. The program brought together young people from various European countries to promote inclusion, respect, and intercultural dialogue through the universal language of sports.

Our team consisted of six (6) participants, Konstantinos Mirtsos, Nikolaos Pelekas, Tzoulio Konti, Ioannis Karatzas, Apostolos Panos & Alexandros Dilaveris, giving us the chance to enrich the cultural evening with live Greek music. We also shared a traditional dish and presented our organization to the group, highlighting the work of European School Radio as the first student-run educational radio in Europe.

Throughout the exchange, our team took part in workshops, team-building games, discussions on mobility and youth opportunities, and activities that challenged stereotypes. It was an inspiring and empowering experience that strengthened our belief in the value of non-formal education.

We return with new friends, ideas, and memories — ready to share what we’ve learned and keep promoting youth voice through media.

Greek Schools in Germany: Pros and Ameliorations

Our new radio show titled “Greek Schools in Germany: Pros and Ameliorations” will be broadcasted on the radio waves of European School Radio, on Saturday, 7/6/2025 at 14:30-15:00 German time (15:30 – 16:00 Greek time).

The broadcast was part of the activities within the framework of the Active Citizenship cultivation program and the development of Active Citizen skills. Specifically, the students of the fifth and sixth grades of our school conducted research on “The positives of Greek education in Germany and the improvements that need to be made,” using questionnaires distributed to classmates, parents, and teachers.

They then grouped the responses and compiled a unified text. The sixth-grade students (Petroula Andrioti, Dimitris and Paschalis Gkotsis, Panagiotis Katirtzidis, Angelos Liolis) presented the research findings to MEP F. Beleris during their visit to the European Parliament in Brussels on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

In our broadcast, you can listen to the students’ presentation, the response of MEP Mr. Beleris and the discussion that followed with his advisors, Mr. Antonakakis G. and Mr. Diamantopoulos S.

This excursion was organized and implemented jointly with the fifth and sixth grade classes (St1 – St2) of the Greek Primary School of Dusseldorf, following the invitation of the MEP himself, with the help of the Parents’ Association of the Greek Primary School of Dusseldorf . Many of the questions were asked by the students of the primary school of Dusseldorf, but in our broadcast, for licensing and data protection reasons, they are asked by the students of the Greek Primary School of Dortmund.

Closing the 2024–25 season- an intercultural celebration of rhythm and color by European School Radio and Youth Radio!

With the last school visit to our studio for this academic year, the amazing team of European School Radio wraps up another year full of creativity, European spirit, and intercultural exchange! Together with Youth Radio EU, as part of the Kids Radio Europe project co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, we’re closing this chapter with inspiration and action!

Today, Tuesday 27 May, we were present at the Alexander Campus in Sindos to musically and sonically cover the outstanding events of the International Hellenic University, as part of the International Staff Week. We shared the heartbeat of student radio with academics from all over Europe, spreading the power of the youth voice through our new radio platform.

At the same time, we celebrate the end of a remarkable school year, 2024–25. A year filled with creativity, emotions, experiences, and strong collaborations, we lived together as a community.

The heart of our team, the First Student Radio, beats strongly from the International Hellenic University across Europe and beyond, while some of our members are currently in Georgia, participating in a European youth exchange programme!

A big thank you to all our partners, to those who believe in our vision, and of course to all the schools, educators, and students who express themselves and communicate through our radio and its activities.

Stay tuned… something new is on the way!

9th Primary School of Heraklion On Air: An Intercultural Podcast for Europe’s Youth!

In an exciting initiative that showcases the power of communication and collaboration, the 6th-grade students of the 9th Primary School of Heraklion, Crete, created a unique podcast, bringing their voices to Europe!

As part of their participation in the European program “Kids Radio Europe” and responding to an invitation from the French partners “Les Francas”, our students embraced the theme “Youth Participation in Europe” from the French local project “Collégiens Citoyens” (“Student Citizens”).

Radio, as a medium of communication and interaction, offers a unique platform for students to host and manage an information channel while also developing their media literacy skills.

The students’ podcast, full of energy and enthusiasm, opened with the song “On écrit sur les murs” by Demis Roussos, interpreted by KIDS UNITED — a song about solidarity, peace, and hope — along with a warm “good morning” to the listeners.

Through their voices, the students proudly presented the 9th Primary School of Heraklion, describing its modern building, bright classrooms, the multipurpose room, and the basketball court, emphasizing that “you never get bored at our school!”

Then, our young radio producers took listeners on a journey through the beautiful city of Heraklion and Crete. They described the crystal-clear beaches, the impressive mountains, the rich and unique flora with endemic plants, as well as the renowned Cretan hospitality and cuisine. They also spoke about the island’s rich history, from ancient myths to the Minoan civilization and the Palace of Knossos.

What made the project even more special was its intercultural dimension. The students translated each sentence from Greek into French, with the valuable support of two students from Jean Monnet University (Saint-Étienne, France) — Alyssia Douat and Audrey Notin — as well as the school’s French teacher, Ms. Maria Giakoumaki. This approach not only strengthened their language skills, but also promoted cultural understanding and cooperation between European teams.

This initiative is a brilliant example of how students can gain valuable experiences, develop skills, and enhance youth participation in European programs.

TechSaloniki 2025: Youthradio.eu Was There!

European School Radio, the First Student Radio, participated with enthusiasm and success as a Media Sponsor at TechSaloniki 2025, the biggest tech event in Thessaloniki, held on May 16–17 at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

With a dynamic two-hour live radio broadcast—professionally produced by the student journalism team of the 3rd General Lyceum of KalamariaEuropean School Radio captured the pulse of technological innovation and artificial intelligence through the eyes of the younger generation. The team had been trained through the program “Broadcasting on European School Radio – Journalistic Production”, proving that student journalism can thrive even in a high-level international tech setting.

The broadcast featured:

  • Interviews with companies participating in TechSaloniki

  • Discussions with alumni and university students attending the event

  • Presentation of the Kids Radio Europe project and a conversation with members of the research team

  • A live music segment, featuring a student who has stood out for two consecutive years in the “Make it Heard” competition

European School Radio’s presence was supported by a custom-designed radio booth, where the Production Team handled the music curation (DJ set), live streaming, technical support (sound and video recording), and of course, social media coverage.

A special highlight was the presentation of the European platform youthradio.eu, which made its debut with its own booth, attracting a large number of visitors. This new digital tool, which promotes youth journalism without linguistic or cultural barriers, was introduced to the public directly by the students themselves.

Among the many activities, students also attended presentations, including a talk by Ms. Marina Delianidi, PhD candidate at the International Hellenic University, from whom they conducted an interview—further enriching their radio experience.

Once again, European School Radio proved that the voice of students can be lively, well-informed, and full of inspiration, even in one of the most demanding tech environments in the country.

See you in 2026, with Europe’s smartest radio station fully operational and bringing even more surprises!

European School Radio at TechSaloniki 2025: Podcasting & Radio in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

“European School Radio, the First Student Radio” is participating as a Media Sponsor in TechSaloniki 2025, on May 16 and 17, the largest technology event in Thessaloniki.

With a central presence at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, European School Radio will be broadcasting a live radio show, offering journalistic coverage of the event. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the future of radio through the lens of the new generation and the latest advancements in Information Technology and Media.

Together with the International Hellenic University and the Intelligent Systems and Internet Applications Research Lab, the event will feature the first official presentation of the technological innovation of the European project “Kids Radio Europe”, implemented under the Creative Europe – Media Literacy program. The project upgrades and evolves the current online platform of European School Radio by integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies for automatic recognition, processing, and in-depth analysis of audio content in a multilingual environment.

In parallel, the event will introduce the under-development European platform youthradio.eu, which aspires to give voice to young people across Europe—promoting youth journalism, inclusive participation, and intercultural communication, regardless of language or background.
